Felix Kubin live in London March 2008

To some he is the whirlwind wizard of the ivories, others know him as Hamburg's foremost purveyor of dadatronic-experimentalist-pop music, to others still he is nothing less than the soul of Juri Gagarin reborn in the body of a child - this week's You Are Hear sees an exclusive live performance from the legendary psychotic-space-age pop artist FELIX KUBIN, recorded on 12 March at London's Corsica Studios: "This music is the melancholic hum of protons."

Rhys Chatham performing live Kosmische Club Oya Festival 2007

Rhys Chatham performing live Kosmische Club Oya Festival 2007

NY underground legend Rhys Chatham performing live in Oslo August 2007. The insistent motorik rock n roll pulse that runs from Bo Diddley to Neu! to Tony Conrad to The Ramones is captured by Rhys Chatham, the crowd rapturously lost in the joy of repetition (as Hot Chip would have it) the sublime object always just over the horizon. He played as part of kosmische night events at the Oya Festival. This is a full performance of Guitar trio which been influential on groups like Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca, Band of Susans, Helmut and the swans.

“Written in 1977, Guitar Trio is Rhys Chatham's signature composition, and with good reason. With a single, repeated chord, Chatham permanently altered the DNA of rock by splicing the gritty, overtone-drenched minimalism of John Cale and Tony Conrad with the elemental fury of the Ramones. The amalgamation was inspired. It energized the downtown New York scene throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, and made Chatham a founding father of the notorious No Wave movement.”

Black Devil Disco Club live at Sonar 2007

Black Devil Disco Club

This rare live set was recorded at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona in June 2007. Black Devil 'Disco Club' ep was one of the most legendary and sought after of all the leftfield disco records of the late 70s, meshing insistent live drumming, hypnotic electronics, tape loops and sidereal vocals into a mysterious, dark and delirious disco masterwork. The work of French library composers Benard Fevre and Jacky Giordano, the record gained totemic status amongst electro-disco afficonados, eventually leading to a timely re-issue on Rephlex Records in 2004.

28 years after the original vinyl appeared, Bernard Fevre has teamed up with electronic musician Gwen Jamois to reconvene the Black Devil Disco Club, further exploring the realms of dark, hypnotic and subliminally seductive electronic disco first hinted at by the original 1978 record, resulting in pair of LPs on Lo Recordings (lorecordings.com) and a series of remixes. .

Clark live at Sonar 2007

Clark at Sonar

One of the leading artists in Warp Records vast pantheon, (Chris) Clark performing live at Barcelona's Sonar festival on June 15th, 2007, accompanied on drums by fellow St Albans electronic alumni Rob Lee. The performance took in material from his recent 'Body Riddle' LP venturing into the realms of fluttering percussion and hypnotic electronics by turns evocative of sinister kosmische library music via his own variety of deleriously askew motorik techno. Plus Magz caught up with Chris after the show to get the low down on his current musical direction.

You Are Hear May 25th 2007 presented by Magz Hall and jim Backhouse

You Are Hear May 25th 2007

Magz and Jim take a peek into the history of the Finnish underground, from the pre-Pan Sonic metal-bashing sturm und klang of Gagaarin Kombinaat to the psychedelic free-folk of teenage-girl-improvising collective Those Lovely Hula Hands. We also preview a few tracks from the forthcoming You Are Hear sessions CD from dayglo breakcore noisenik Germlin and post-NDW minimal wavers Asja Auf Capri. Elsewhere on the show we trip out to the cosmic disco of Black Devil Disco Club, shake down to Dan Deacon's epic-postpunk-electro-fuzz and become invisible with the Morricone-esque desertscapes of Rothko, with plenty more surprises to boot. You Are Hear will be celebrating 5 years of genre-defying sonic pleasure with a birthday party at Cargo on the 31st May and the release of a compilation of their best live studio sessions on Hearing Aid Records.
