Silver Apples Live at Corsica Studios London 08 You Are Hear Special

silverapplesliveonyouarehear

The latest edition of You Are Hear features an exclusive live set from legendary electronic music pioneers The Silver Apples. The Silver Apples were formed in New York in 1967 by drummer Danny Taylor and vocalist Simeon Coxe, the bands unique sound came from a hand built electronic instrument Simeon built from several oscillators with eighty-six manual controls which created a sound which predated and certainly influenced Krautrock, Suicide, Spaceman3 and a host of post rock bands such as the Klaxons who the band came to inspire some 40 years later. The Sliver Apples are now a solo act, sadly Danny died in 2005, however Simeon is very alive and kicking and as you will hear in this excellent live set recorded at the Corsica Studios in London on 12th march 2008 to a full house.

To some he is the whirlwind wizard of the ivories, others know him as Hamburg's foremost purveyor of dadatronic-experimentalist-pop music, to others still he is nothing less than the soul of Juri Gagarin reborn in the body of a child - this week's You Are Hear sees an exclusive live performance from the legendary psychotic-space-age pop artist FELIX KUBIN, recorded on 12 March at London's Corsica Studios: "This music is the melancholic hum of protons."

You Are Hear voyage beneath the underground: New Music from Ceramic Hobs, Eats Tapes, White Hills, Murcof, Bishi and many more...

Septembers 07 You Are Hear show

MAGZ and JIM present some of the latest beneath-the-underground sounds which have crept into earshot in recent weeks. Blackpool's CERAMIC HOBS win the coveted 'title of the week' prize for their new song 'All Psychiatrists Are Bastards', EATS TAPES piledrive our ears with their infectious donner-und-blitzen scrapyard techno, The MIKE SAMMES SINGERS sing the praises of Fine Fayre convenience food, while ROLAN VEGA's analogue electronica basks in a half-remembered hauntological twilight. Other new sounds come from pioneering 60s analogue tape-splicer TOD DOCKSTADER, the long awaited new album from Mexican widescreen electronica wonder MURCOF, sitar-disco queen BISHI, and the Hawkwind-cum-Sabbath post-kraut stoner rock of New York's WHITE HILLS.

Rhys Chatham performing live Kosmische Club Oya Festival 2007

Rhys Chatham performing live Kosmische Club Oya Festival 2007

NY underground legend Rhys Chatham performing live in Oslo August 2007. The insistent motorik rock n roll pulse that runs from Bo Diddley to Neu! to Tony Conrad to The Ramones is captured by Rhys Chatham, the crowd rapturously lost in the joy of repetition (as Hot Chip would have it) the sublime object always just over the horizon. He played as part of kosmische night events at the Oya Festival. This is a full performance of Guitar trio which been influential on groups like Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca, Band of Susans, Helmut and the swans.

“Written in 1977, Guitar Trio is Rhys Chatham's signature composition, and with good reason. With a single, repeated chord, Chatham permanently altered the DNA of rock by splicing the gritty, overtone-drenched minimalism of John Cale and Tony Conrad with the elemental fury of the Ramones. The amalgamation was inspired. It energized the downtown New York scene throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, and made Chatham a founding father of the notorious No Wave movement.”

Spectrum, Hanne Hukkelberg and Salvatore live at the Oya Festival, Oslo, Norway

Spectrum, Hanne Hukkelberg,Salvatore Oya Festival

The Oya Festival took place between the 7th and 11th August in Oslo's medieval parc, daytime rock-festival joys giving way to a plethora of inventive night-time activity courtesy of Oslo's independent promoters. Kosmische club played host to Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3)'s SPECTRUM project, combining vintage analogue electronics and myriad sounds coaxed from an array of mini keyboards and circuit bent toys. Opening with an oblique homage to Kraftwerk's 'Hall of Mirrors', before drifting into almost vintage Spacemen 3 territory, the droning half-light broken by pulsing neon-bursts of electronics, bathing Pete Kember's warm tones in a aquatic blue glow. The daytime festival on Saturday was opened by Norwegian chanteuse Hanne Hukkelberg, whose haunting songs, orchestrated with glass celeste, sonic-bicycle wheels, harmonium amongst other exotic instrumentation, tug at the heartstrings while moving to increasingly oblique time-signatures. Closing the Saturday night was Salvatore, whose motorik autobahn-rock moves to a more singular rhythm, colliding unstoppable Neu! propulsion with dub effects, cinematic crescendos and shards of astringent electronica.

Black Devil Disco Club live at Sonar 2007

Black Devil Disco Club

This rare live set was recorded at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona in June 2007. Black Devil 'Disco Club' ep was one of the most legendary and sought after of all the leftfield disco records of the late 70s, meshing insistent live drumming, hypnotic electronics, tape loops and sidereal vocals into a mysterious, dark and delirious disco masterwork. The work of French library composers Benard Fevre and Jacky Giordano, the record gained totemic status amongst electro-disco afficonados, eventually leading to a timely re-issue on Rephlex Records in 2004.

28 years after the original vinyl appeared, Bernard Fevre has teamed up with electronic musician Gwen Jamois to reconvene the Black Devil Disco Club, further exploring the realms of dark, hypnotic and subliminally seductive electronic disco first hinted at by the original 1978 record, resulting in pair of LPs on Lo Recordings (lorecordings.com) and a series of remixes. .

Clark live at Sonar 2007

Clark at Sonar

One of the leading artists in Warp Records vast pantheon, (Chris) Clark performing live at Barcelona's Sonar festival on June 15th, 2007, accompanied on drums by fellow St Albans electronic alumni Rob Lee. The performance took in material from his recent 'Body Riddle' LP venturing into the realms of fluttering percussion and hypnotic electronics by turns evocative of sinister kosmische library music via his own variety of deleriously askew motorik techno. Plus Magz caught up with Chris after the show to get the low down on his current musical direction.

You Are Hear May 25th 2007 presented by Magz Hall and jim Backhouse

You Are Hear May 25th 2007

Magz and Jim take a peek into the history of the Finnish underground, from the pre-Pan Sonic metal-bashing sturm und klang of Gagaarin Kombinaat to the psychedelic free-folk of teenage-girl-improvising collective Those Lovely Hula Hands. We also preview a few tracks from the forthcoming You Are Hear sessions CD from dayglo breakcore noisenik Germlin and post-NDW minimal wavers Asja Auf Capri. Elsewhere on the show we trip out to the cosmic disco of Black Devil Disco Club, shake down to Dan Deacon's epic-postpunk-electro-fuzz and become invisible with the Morricone-esque desertscapes of Rothko, with plenty more surprises to boot. You Are Hear will be celebrating 5 years of genre-defying sonic pleasure with a birthday party at Cargo on the 31st May and the release of a compilation of their best live studio sessions on Hearing Aid Records.

You Are Hear alternative new music presented by Jim Backhouse Feb 9th 2007

You Are Hear alternative new music presented by Jim Backhouse Feb 9th 2007

Feb 9th For this week's You Are Hear, Jim Backhouse trawls the knotted undergrowth of early electronic music for more astringent blasts of analogue synth-blatt, elaborate tape manipulation and the sounds of visionary inventors struggling with primitive technologies: from the pioneering soundworks of Daphne Oram, founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to the precocious bleeps and squawks of some US High School Students let loose in the electronic music lab. Mika Vainio also brings us a genuinely terrifying sliver of noise from his new album 'Revitty' which sounds reminiscent of being torn limb-from-limb by a shoal of bloodthirsty sharks; Adam Bohman offers sage advice to the ill and lovelorn, and besides that we have plenty more psychedelic, electronic, home-made, DIY, perverse, collective karma for you to bug out to. Enjoy!

John Peel talking about radio at the Big Chill 2003

John Peel talking about radio at the Big Chill 2003

To celebrate Peel Day, we've decided to podcast thoughts from the man himself, from the You Are Hear archive shows. This extract of the late great John Peel talking about his work were recorded at a discussion on the future of radio at the big chill festial back in 2003. It was a chance for many Peel fans to hear his thoughts and experiences of working at radio one. It certainly seems even more prescient in current times.

Dirty Fan Male : Explicit Content - Comedy

Dirty Fan Male featuring: Jonny Trunk and Wisbey

Enter your email details and we will send you a message everytime we put up a new You Are Hear Podcast show::

Delivered by FeedBurner

Jonny Trunk's infamous festival of filth 'Dirty Fan Male' both delighted and appalled Big Chill-goers in equal measure: a musical stage show comprising some of the most bizarre, outrageous, deranged and inadvertantly surreal letters written to British top shelf lovelies by their most devoted fans. Described by The Guardian no less as 'delicious filth', the show is by turns hilarious, bewildering, scary and strangely touching. So listen in as Jonny Trunk and Wisbey invite you into the strange and sidesplittingly funny regions of the male psyche where you will meet the likes of Spunky Arthur and Lionel with his Big Rising Willie.

Many thanks to Jonny Trunk and Wisbey for allowing us to record this performance. If you enjoyed it, take a look at Jonny's TRUNK RECORDS website for lots of incredibly strange and wonderful records and plenty more smut.

As Jonny describes the show we "had people in fits of laughter which slowly developed into a desperate sense of madness, sadness and more. You will never experience anything quite like it. We haven't and we made it."

Green Man Festival Special Feat. Nalle, Juana Molia and Tunng

Nalle, Juana Molia and Tunng live Green Man Festival Special Podcast August 2006

This show brings together some highlights from this year's Green Man festival, held in the dramatically beautiful surrounds of the Brecon Beacons in late August. For the last four years the festival has grown in size, bringing together a diverse selection of artists all influenced in some way by folk and roots music, from the percussive and hypnotic electronics of Steve Reid and Keiran Hebden to the sublime folk / blues explorations of folk-revival legends Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, with countless acoustic singer-songwriters.

For this show, we have chosen to present highlights from the live sets of Nalle, Juana Molina and Tunng.

Glasgow's Nalle comprise former members of the extended folk-improv-drone-jazz outfit Scatter, continuing and focussing many of the collective's preoccupations: drawing on traditional folksong, psychedelic minimalism, in a spirit of playful experimentation and structural freedom. The voice of Hanne, at once soothing and astringent, meshes with shruti box drones, wooden and straw percussion, viola, bouzouki, oud and other instruments yet more exotic to create a beautifully haunting and uncanny atmosphere.

Juana Molina, an extraordinary singer-songwriter from Buenos Aires, whose graceful and hypnotic music, flows from her acoustic guitar, askew live electronics and her mesmerising voice. Formerly a celebrated TV comic in her native Argentina, she has released several albums since 1996, three of which have been released on Domino Records in the UK, the most recent being 'Son' from which much of her Green Man set was taken.

Tunng play a mesmerising mix of folk-influenced acoustic music and busy electronica, overlaying electronic crackles, vocal harmonies, bewitching mantras and synthetic rhythms. Their two albums on Static Caravan and their prolific touring schedule have gathered them a substantial following.

Big Chill Folk Special : Vashti Bunyan, A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Martin Carthy and Tunng

Big Chill Festival Vashti Bunyan, A Hawk And A Hackshaw, Martin Carthy and Tunng

Magz Hall brings you a You Are Hear show featuring folk highlights from the Big Chill Festival

featuring live performances from Vashti Bunyan, A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Martin Carthy and Tunng

www.youarehear.co.uk

Vashti Bunyan is an English folksinger who debuted in 1965 in the wake of Donovan, releasing, Just Another Diamond Day (Island 1970). Vashti disappeared to Ireland for 30 years, until she was asked to guest on Piano Magic's Writers Without Homes (4AD, 2002). After three decades and a half, a new album by Vashti Bunyan finally surfaced: Lookaftering (DiCristina Stair Builders, 2005). Backed by (among others) Mice Parade's Adam Pierce, Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom, and availing herself of Max Richter's discrete neo-classical orchestration, Bunyan picked up from where she left, her fragile voice sounding virtually the same,

A Hawk And A Hacksaw are the Albuquerque-based duo of Jeremy Barnes (drums, accordion, vocals) and Heather Trost (violin).
A Hawk And A Hacksaw's live set displays the virtuosity of multi-instrumentalist Jeremy plays accordion, vocals and percussion (simultaneously!) whilst accompanied by Heather on violin, glockenspiel and melodica. It's a musical journey across the most varied of terrain, dipping in and out of modern composition and American and Eastern European folk traditions.

Martin Carthy Is a legend in his own lifetime, arguably the most important English folk artist of his generation, still playing folk clubs all over the world this set was also specially recorded by us for podcast at the Big Chill Festival.
Carthy was born in Hertfordshire in 1941 and is an acknowledged influence on both Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. Carthy's pioneering ventures took him into the heart of the 70s folk explosion. He has also enjoyed over 30 years of celebrated performance with wife Norma and more recently has toured and recorded with their daughter Eliza.

Tunng play a mesmerising mix of folky acoustics and busy electronica, overlaying electronic crackles, gorgeous harmonies, bewitching mantras and synthetic beats that are reminiscent of early Beta Band, 'The Wicker Man' soundtrack and Four Tet.

You Are Hear Sonar Highlights from Magz Hall feat Tucker, Schnider TM, Snr Coconut

Sonar Special feat Tucker, Schnider TM, Snr Coconut, June 2006

Magz Hall brings www.youarehear.co.uk brings you a new podcast friendly You Are Hear show featuring highlights from the Sonar Festival in Barclelona featuring live sets from:

www.youarehear.co.uk

Tucker

The man behind "Electoon Wizard" continues to plough his own original furrow - old school hip-hop, with a touch of humour on the organ keyboard and a pile of toy instruments. Part jazz, part funk, part Martian. With Boney M covers thrown in.
http://www.oddjob.jp/

The Modified Toy Orchestra

If you thought every instrument possible had been invented, think again. Here is Brian Duffy to make you change your mind. The man behind Warm Circuit Records has been adapting toys for years to make them into musical objects that are as entertaining as they are original.

Jake

This North American's approach to hip-hop is most unusual. The man behind the famous "Jack the Rapper" brings together a mass of influences, styles and benchmarks (including a version of the Buzzcocks), to make his lyrics into a true musical feast that is not suitable for purists.

Senior Coconut

Uwe Shmidt's maverick spirit and a fascination for Latin music has led to him playing a key role in the history of electronic music. The latest is "Yellow Fever!" a tribute to the legendary Yellow Magic Orchestra, in an electronic cumbia, bolero and cha-cha-cha style. Pure magic.

http://www.essayrecordings.com/

Schneider TM

Dirk Dresselhaus is very comfortable on the fine line separating indie from electronica. “Škoda Mluvit”, his latest release on City Slang, is in the same vein, despite his description of it as indie-rock ragga. A melange of sounds which mixes guitar arrangements with beats and breaks with pop and glitch as if they were predestined to be together.

http://www.schneidertm.net/

and Marina Yangisawa

Marina Yanagisawa's "Howlin" is a unique musical instrument largely inspired by the legendary Theremin, one of the oldest electronic instruments. This device built from acrylic pipes and microphones makes howling sounds, which are normally thought unpleasant and impossible to control, into a pleasant musical experience.
